Inclusions, fractures, and other irregularities within the crystal structure create diverse surfaces that interact with light in fascinating ways. Moreover, the interplay between flaws and light within crystals gives rise to a captivating play of colours. The images I took that are featured in this article were take-in a very rough fashion: handheld with a table light on a 90mm Tamron f2.8. A macro lens is essential for macro photography due to its unique ability to reproduce subjects at a 1:1 ratio, capturing intricate details and rendering them at life-size. The specialised optics of a macro lens enable close focusing distances, precise control over depth of field, and minimal distortion, ensuring the highest level of image quality and magnification. The handheld approach serves as an excellent starting point for macro photography, offering flexibility and freedom of movement. By handholding the camera, photographers can easily explore various angles and compositions, experiment with different perspectives, and quickly adapt to the ever-changing characteristics of the crystals. Handheld shooting allows for spontaneous adjustments, making it ideal for capturing the essence of the crystals in their natural state. It enables photographers to explore the interplay of light and shadow, the dynamic textures, and the intricate details of the crystals with ease. When shooting handheld macro shots of crystals, a few techniques can help elevate the final results. By analysing the images on a larger screen, photographers can fine-tune their composition, evaluating elements such as framing, symmetry, and balance to achieve the desired aesthetic.
